Abstract
YOUR report ‘Electric feeling on our streets' (The Star, Sept 3) on Proton’s plan to produce electric cars using Detroit Electric’s technology has piqued my interest.
I am fully supportive of Proton’s effort to diversify its product especially when considering the current economic constraints facing car users.
However, in espousing the benefits of the electric car as economical and environment- friendly, I also believe that the public should be made aware of the possible limitations from the use of such technology.
First of all, the use of “emission-free electric car” does not necessarily mean we are environment-friendly. If the electricity we use to charge the vehicles comes from fossil fuel sources (i.e. coal and diesel power plants) then we are merely shifting the emission from the tailpipe to the smoke stacks of these power plants.
