Abstract
DURING the golden age of Malay cinema in Singapore (1940s to early 1970s), two films, Selamat Tinggal Kekasehku (directed
by L. Krishnan, 1955) and Sri Menanti (Phani Majumdar, 1958), addressed Malay-Sino relationships via romantic tales. Both films
offer an indictment of insidious racism that permeated the region then while hinting at a potential "nation in the making".
