Abstract
LETTERS: In my role as a parent and educator, I am always aware and concerned about the language my child or students use when they talk about themselves.
Often, I would assign to my students, for instance, a task that goes beyond their comfort zones, and I would hear complaints like, "I've never been good at this," or "this is not my strong suit".
My heart aches every time I hear them say this because they are assigning the limitations to themselves, as their character or identity.
As the saying by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu goes: "Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny."
Mindful of the language people use, I would ask them to reframe their words.
