Abstract

INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been travelling around the world in the 18 months since he took office seeking to attract the 35 million-strong Indian diaspora to invest or bring their skills back to India. He wants their support to develop India into an economic superpower. Last week he went to London and the Wembley Stadium was packed with a 60,000-strong crowd of Indians. The reason he had such a rapturous reception was because to the Indians, they are still Persons of Indian Origin (PIO). PIO is a person whom any of his/her ancestors were Indian nationals, and who is presently holding another country’s citizenship. It is a policy that proves that the Indian government still recognises the Indian diaspora and their descendants as the people of India. These second and third generations are welcome to go back to India with all the skills that they have.
